One Day in Segovia

Only a short train or drive away, Segovia offers a great day trip from Madrid. Check out our guide below to exploring the town of Segovia.

How to get to and around Segovia?

From Madrid, Segovia can be reached by car, train, or bus. Using a rental car from the Madrid airport, the drive is fairly easy, a little over an hour. There is plenty of public parking, so if you are planning a larger road trip or just want to be on your own schedule, driving is a great idea.

Spain has an amazing train and metro set up, so there is train from the Madrid metro to Segovia. The train only takes 30 minutes from the AVE station next to the Charmartin Station in northern Madrid. The trip from downtown Madrid can take up to two hours though using the metro to the Charmartin Station then the AVE train to Segovia. You can purchase tickets at the AVE station.

Once you arrive in Segovia, plan to walk a lot. All of the attractions are reachable by foot. You can catch a free walking tour or hire a guided tour to see the sights.

Things to Do and See

Below are a list of the top sights. They are listed out in order of how we visited, doing a loop around the city.

  • Aqueduct of Segovia – The aqueduct is a piece of Roman history still standing today. It is probably one of the best kept Roman ruins in Spain. The aqueduct is huge and makes for great pictures from almost every angle.
  • Catedral de Segovia – One of the most picturesque cathedrals in Spain, it is hard to miss as you head through Segovia. The church is gothic style Roman catholic architecture and they do allow you to tour a portion of the interior for a small fee.
  • Alcázar de Segovia – The castle is restored from its 12th century beginnings and is known for its shape, similar to that of a ships bow. You can tour the castle’s interior as well for a small fee.

There are a few other things to see around Segovia if you have the extra time.

How much did it all cost?

A breakdown of our expenses below for a one day tour:

  • Rental Car (We stopped on our way to Pamplona) – $140 for two days
  • Parking in Segovia – 7 Euros
  • Lunch (3 Course Meal) in the Plaza in front of the Aqueduct – 30 Euros for Two People

Entrance fees to the cathedral and castle ran between 5 and 10 euros, however we elected to enjoy the exterior architecture and skip the interior tours.
